RCGP Inspire Awards 2019
Very proud of this award from the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2019…
But also sad and, if I am honest, frustrated.
I received this award for how I changed teaching around mental health for undergraduate medical students at Brighton Medical School- bringing concepts around psychological trauma, impacts of shame, and the crucial importance of self care for doctors.
This was of course pre-covid; now all of this is even more important- but still extraordinarily rare for these concepts to be taught and embodied within medicine.
However without understanding this, and embracing these principles fully, we have higher rates of burnout for doctors and poorer outcomes for patients.
There is so much more awareness in the public sphere about the impacts of trauma and the vital role of self care, that there is a demand for this knowledge in our medical profession.
I am optimistic that things are starting to shift- slowly.
